教英は今年度4月に2名の教員を新たに迎えました。
そのうちの1人、ホフム先生から、本ブログ用の自己紹介をいただきました。

Hello everyone! My name is Daniel Hougham, and I joined the English Education Program in April 2026.
Although I have worked at Hiroshima University as a full-time faculty member for the past four years, I recently transferred from the Institute for Foreign Language Research and Education to the Department of Education, Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences, where I now teach and conduct research in English education.
In the School of Education, I teach Communicative Writing, English Vocabulary Practice, English Pronunciation Practice, English Usage Practice, and other courses. I also teach Academic Writing for graduate students.
My connection with Hiroshima University’s Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences goes back further than my current appointment. I completed my Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics here at Hiroshima University, and I am delighted to continue my work here as a member of the English Education Program.
I first came to Japan around twenty years ago and have since had the opportunity to work in a wide variety of educational settings. Over the years, I have taught students of many different ages and backgrounds, from young learners to university students and working professionals. Those experiences have continually reminded me that language learning is not just about memorizing vocabulary or grammar. It is about building confidence and finding meaningful ways to communicate.
My research explores how people learn to communicate more effectively in English, including spoken communication, vocabulary learning, fluency development, and the use of technology to support language education. I am particularly interested in helping learners become more confident and independent users of English.
In my classes, I try to create an environment where students actively use English, collaborate with one another, and are not afraid to make mistakes. I believe that curiosity, persistence, and regular practice are just as important as natural ability. In fact, they may be even more important.
Whether you are already studying English or are thinking about joining Hiroshima University in the future, I hope you will find learning languages to be both rewarding and enjoyable. I look forward to meeting many of you in class and working together in the years ahead.
みなさん、こんにちは。2026年4月より英語教育学講座に着任しました、ダニエル・ホフムです。
私は広島大学で4年間、常勤教員として勤務してきましたが、このたび、外国語教育研究センターから大学院人間社会科学研究科教育科学専攻へ異動し、英語教育に関する教育・研究に携わっています。
学部では、コミュニカティブ・ライティング、英語ボキャブラリー演習、英語発音演習、英語語用法演習などを担当しています。また、大学院ではアカデミック・ライティングも担当しています。
実は、広島大学大学院とのご縁は、今回の異動よりも以前から続いています。私は広島大学で応用言語学の博士号を取得しており、現在、英語教育学講座の教員として教育・研究に携われることを大変嬉しく思っています。
私が初めて日本に来たのは約20年前です。それ以来、さまざまな教育機関で、子どもから大学生、社会人まで、幅広い学習者に英語を教えてきました。そうした経験を通して強く感じているのは、語学学習は単に単語や文法を覚えることではないということです。自信を育み、人と意味のあるコミュニケーションができる力を身につけることこそが大切だと考えています。
私の研究では、英語でより効果的にコミュニケーションを行うための学びについて研究しています。特に、スピーキング、語彙学習、流暢さの向上、そしてテクノロジーを活用した英語教育に関心を持っています。学習者一人ひとりが自信を持ち、自立して英語を使えるようになることを目標に、研究に取り組んでいます。
授業では、学生が積極的に英語を使い、お互いに協力しながら、失敗を恐れずに挑戦できる環境づくりを大切にしています。また、語学の上達には才能だけでなく、好奇心や粘り強さ、そして継続的な努力が非常に重要であり、むしろそれ以上に大切な場合もあると信じています。
現在広島大学で学んでいる皆さんはもちろん、これから進学を考えている高校生の皆さんにも、英語学習の楽しさや奥深さを感じてもらえたら嬉しいです。教室でお会いし、一緒に学べる日を楽しみにしています。
